HMRC issues guidance on QR code scam
17 Mar 2022
HMRC has recently updated its guidance concerning scams – this updated guidance includes ways in which scammers have attempted to divulge personal information using QR codes.
HMRC has confirmed that it will not send a QR code to a taxpayer. Therefore, if you receive a demand for payment with a QR code, it is a scam.
However, what makes this particularly difficult to spot is the fact that there is a genuine QR code presented to a taxpayer when logging into their HMRC account.
This genuine QR code aims to prepopulate payment details of an online banking account using a mobile device. Unlike the false QR code this one is completely legitimate. The payment details displayed on their mobile banking platform should mirror those shown in their HMRC online account.
Unfortunately, as is often the case, as HMRC attempts to offer more payment options, new attempts to defraud taxpayers will be made.
Everyone should always check whether any communication from HMRC requesting payment or personal information is genuine. HMRC's guidance on how to identify scam-related phone calls, emails, texts and more can be found here: https://bit.ly/3igZY5y
